General questions on animal health monitoring

Why is health monitoring of laboratory animals important?
In the spirit of the overriding goal of animal welfare, we want to protect laboratory animals from infectious diseases and unnecessary pain and suffering. The husbandry of healthy animals and animal populations as well as their welfare is not only enshrined in law, but in the sense of the 3R's also a duty for everyone who works with laboratory animals.

The Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Association (FELASA) has therefore drawn up a recommendation summarising the pathogens and examination intervals relevant to the specific species. Our test packages (Overview) are compiled according to the FELASA guidelines. Determining the health status of livestock is not only relevant for the purpose of animal welfare. It is particularly important to understand and to document the health status  when exchanging animals between institutions. Furthermore, it is also a question of assuring experimental quality. The validity and reproducibility of your research data also depends on the health status of the laboratory animals employed.
